- ⅓ are all volunteer, others have small staffs
- National Association supports all chapters
- 1900-1910: Groups founded for cultural exchange
- 1920’s: groups founded for “competitive” reasons - If Chicago has one, St. Louis should have one too, etc
- 1960s: movement to found Japan societies due to political climate/emphasis on Japan/US relationship
- More than half of societies founded in the 1980’s s a complement to the direct investment by Japanese companies in the United States
- Indiana, Tennessee, etc.
- No historical ties with Japan, but recipient of large scale investment from Japanese businesses.
- All chapters started for different reasons, but function similarly toward same goals
